Torrey Pines: Weathering the Financial Storm
State budget cuts again are threatening to severely curtail hours and services at state parks including Torrey Pines. With the failure of Prop 21 in November, California State Parks are looking at a $15 million shortfall in the state allocation.
A maintenance backlog of more than $1 billion already exists. Twice in the past two years, state parks were on the brink of closure, and nearly 150 state parks have been shut down part‐time or suffered deep service reductions. Now 70 state parks are slated for permanent closure by July 2012.
At Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, staff reductions are being implemented but there are no plans to close the state beach and reserve. TPA urges members to stay informed about state park budgets. Please see the online action alert.
